Alex Eala stayed in the hunt for the W50 Indore singles crown after sweeping Anca Alexia Todoni of Romania, 7-5, 6-2, in their quarterfinal match Friday in India.
Eala, the No. 184 netter in the Women’s Tennis Association rankings, needed one hour and 39 minutes to win and inch closer to the top prize of the $40,000 tournament.
The Rafael Nadal Academy graduate previously defeated Russia’s Ekaterina Yashinq, 7-6, 6-7, 6-0, in the Last 16.
So far, this is Eala’s farthest has been in a tournament in 2024 after exiting the quarterfinal of the W50 Pune in India and the first qualifying round of the 2024 Australian Open last month.
Now, she has a chance to make it her first championship match in the women’s singles this year if she beats Russia’s Polina Kudermetova in the semifinal.
Kudermetova, No. 188 in the WTA rankings and seeded second in the tournament, edged out Eri Shimizu of Japan, 6-7, 5-7. 6-2, in a separate match-up to reach the semis.
