Senator Christopher “Bong” Go called on everyone to sustain the previous administration’s drive against illegal drugs when he graced the 1st Warden’s Rapid Chess Tournament on Saturday at the Abreeza Mall in Davao City.
Go likewise reiterated his belief that sports play a crucial role in nation building.
As the Chair of the Senate Committee on Sports, Go underscored that his presence at the tournament was a reaffirmation of his dedication to see a better future for the country.
“In this gathering, we are all united not just as participants and spectators but also advocates for a better future for our youth,” Go said in his speech.
He also emphasized the value of chess as a game that develops strategic thinking and mental acuity.
Through supporting competitions such as the Warden’s Rapid Chess Tournament, Go hopes to draw attention to lesser-popular sports and promote an inclusive and diverse culture within the Philippine sports scene.
“I believe that chess is not only a game of intelligence and strategy but mirrors life as well. In every move, there is a lesson, understanding, discipline and an opportunity to mold one’s character,” he said.
During the event, Go also gave away chess boards to 21 chess clubs and sling bags to 274 tournament participants.
“While I was watching you, I could see your determination and hope and I could not help but admire the potential of every Filipino youth. As you make your moves, I could see the emergence of a new leader, innovators and people who are going to play a role in our society.”
Go likewise upheld the importance of sports in making sure the illegal drugs doesn’t get in the way of progress.
“I don’t want to see the gains (against illegal drugs) during the time of President (Rodrigo) Duterte go down the drain because if illegal drugs make its return, criminality will come back as well as corruption. Believe me. Through sports we can properly guide the youth.”
