The Philippine national soft tennis team is bracing for a string of tournaments in 2024 after their success in the 2023 Southeast Asian Games in Cambodia.
Four-time Southeast Asian Games gold medalist Bien Zoleta told DAILY TRIBUNE that they are revving up for a ranking tournament in Thailand in July and the 17th World Soft Tennis Championship in September in South Korea this year alongside pocket tournaments.
The Philippines dominated the soft tennis scene in the biennial meet in Phnom Penh, taking home a 3-1-1 gold-silver-bronze medal haul.
“The whole national soft tennis team is preparing for the world championships in September. We’re excited to work again and hopefully, get another medal,” Zoleta said.
“We have a world ranking tournament in Thailand this July before the World Championships. It’s one of the tournaments we are really preparing for because it determines our placing for the world championships. This is a first for soft tennis.”
The last time the World Soft Tennis Championship was held was back in 2019 in China.
Bien’s sister, Bambi, also couldn’t wait to show what she’s capable of with the facilities in the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex back to being fully used.
“Things are back to normal so we’re excited after 2023. The team is motivated to do better and the PSC (Philippine Sports Commission) and POC (Philippine Olympic Committee) fully support us. We will try our best for the world championships this year,” Bambi said.
