Filipino-American Emma Malabuyo made an impact as she coasted to the women’s floor exercise finals of the FIG World Cup in Cairo last Saturday.
The 21-year-old Malabuyo scored 12.470 points to finish seventh and seal her spot in the medal round on Sunday.
Only the top eight in each apparatus will contend for podium honors.
Malabuyo, a University of California-Los Angeles student, is looking to gain ranking points through the Cairo leg of the World Cup in a bid to join two-time world champion Carlos Yulo and Aleah Finnegan in the Paris Olympics.
“Since I’m focused on so many different things and I’m enjoying them, it’s helping me have more energy and fire for this dream,” Malabuyo said in an interview with the LA Times.
After the Cairo event, Malabuyo is set to compete in the Cottbus leg in Germany from 22 to 25 February and the Baku leg in Azerbaijan from 7 to 10 March.
