Sofia Frank takes on the world’s best young skaters as she competes in the ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships 2024 at the Taipei Arena in Chinese Taipei on Wednesday.
The 18-year-old Filipino-American figure skater is set to compete in the junior women’s short program in the 46-woman field which starts at 3 p.m.
Philippine Skating Union president Nikki Cheng told DAILY TRIBUNE said she is hoping that Frank will be able to advance to the free skate category this year after finishing 41st out of 47 skaters last year.
“It’s her third consecutive year already. Only the top 24 skaters will be able to compete in free skate,” Cheng said.
“During her first year, she was able to qualify but she came up short last year. We’re hoping we have better results this year.”
“Definitely the powerhouses will be Korea and Japan. Canada and US are also strong. I think these are the heavy competitors in figure skating,” Cheng said.
The PhSU chief also noted that skaters from Japan and Korea could challenge Frank in her quest to make it to the free skate event.
With Frank being the lone Filipino skater, the federation calls for support as Frank battles against the best young skaters in the world.
“Let’s cheer Sofia on as she takes on the short program starting Feb 28! Let’s show them what we’re made of, Sofia Frank!” the federation posted on social media.
