The national squash team bagged two medals in the 24th International Jumbo Doubles Squash Tournament 2024 for the President’s Cup yesterday at the Tanglin Club in Singapore.
The under-23 pair of Mel John Arebado and Van-Aero Dalida won the gold medal in the open special plate category title after defeating Samuel Chan and Tay Zi Hang of Malaysia, 15-11, 14-15, 15-6, in the final.
Meanwhile, David William Peliño and Reymark Perez Begornia settled for the silver medal after yielding to Elvinn Keo of Malaysia and Marcus Phua of Singapore, 1-2, in the championship round of the open category.
Jemyca Aribado and Aysah Reyes Dalida finished fifth in the open category over the 64 pairs who participated as they made it as far as the quarterfinal before getting eliminated by Peliño and Begornia in the quarterfinal.
Philippine Squash Academy president Robert Bachmann is happy to see Kayod Pilipinas’ first medals in 2024.
“It’s a yearly event that we join in Singapore,” Bachmann, the older brother of Philippine Sports Commission chairman Richard “Dickie” Bachmann, said, adding that jumbo doubles is their strength as they seek to qualify in the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028.
“We’re not sure if the jumbo doubles event will be included in the LA Olympics but this is one of the events we excel in.”
