The national rowing squad is neck-deep in training in preparation for the 2024 Asian Olympic and Paralympic Qualification Regatta from 19 to 21 April in Chengju, South Korea.

National team coach Ed Maerina said his paddlers are now getting stronger as they hold a one-month training camp in China after the Olympic qualifiers.

Leading the squad in its buildup in Yangzhou is former Olympian Cris Nievarez together with Southeast Asian Games silver medalist Joanie Delgaco and lightweight double sculls bets Zuriel Sumintac and Rynjie Peñaredondo, who have been training since 25 February.

“I added strength training here since they missed it back in Manila. They are getting stronger and their skills are getting good as well,” Maerina, who competed in the 1988 Seoul Olympics, said.

“For now, we won’t have any competitions before the Regatta.”

Only the top five rowers in the singles sculls and top two rowers in the lightweight double sculls will be able to book a spot for Summer Games, which opens on 26 July.

Maerina said the team will be focusing on speed training once they return to Manila on 25 March.
