HANGZHOU, China — Olympian Irish Magno made a shocking exit following a lopsided loss to Nikina Uktamova of Uzbekistan in the Round of 16 of the women’s 54-kg event of the 19th Asian Games at the Hangzhou Gymnasium here.
The 32-year-old Magno, a four-time Southeast Asian Games silver medalist, was dominated right from the start, allowing the younger, more aggressive Uzbek to dictate the tempo early on.
“Disappointed. Pasensya na. Hindi tayo pinalad,” said Magno, one of the four Filipino boxers in the Tokyo Olympics.
Magno is the second Filipino boxer to bomb out of competition.
Prior to her, Aira Villegas suffered a sorry loss to Yesugen Oyuntsetseg of Mongolia in the women’s 50-kg class.
