University of Perpetual Help System Dalta retained the seniors title while Lyceum of the Philippine University clinched the juniors crown of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Season 99 chess tournament on Thursday in Letran College.
The Altas beat online chess champion San Beda University, 3.0-1.0, in the championship led by Most Valuable Player and Board 1 medalist Genesis Borromeo.
Junior Pirates chess team, meanwhile, outsmarted challenger Perpetual Junior Altas via 2.5-1.5 card in finals with National Master Angele Biete emerging as Board 2 medalist and MVP.
“I congratulate my teams, both the seniors and juniors, for doing their best for this win. Although the juniors fell short, we are looking forward to winning another crown next season,” Perpetual coach Roel Abelgas said.
Joseph Rivera of Jose Rizal University was named as Rookie of the Year and Adrian de Luna of San Beda as Freshman of the Year while the Board 1 to 6 medalists are Borromeo, Noel Geronimo and Joseph Rivera of JRU, Adrina De Luna of San Beda, Romeo Canino of Perpetual and Ferdie Casabuena of Lyceum.
Abelgas, a FIDE Master, was named Coach of the Year of the seniors division.
In the junior ranks, meanwhile, Welsey Magbanua of Perpetual was named Rookie of the Year while Alexis Saballe of San Sebastian College emerged as Freshman of the Year.
The board medalists are Cedric Abris of Saint Benilde, National Master Angle Biete of Lyceum, John Marcus Lomio and Wayne Ruiz of JRU, Ariel Santander of Lyceum and Magbanua.
Lyceum coach Emerson Sayaman bagged the Coach of the Year honors in the juniors division.
