Jamil Wilson came through with key baskets down the stretch to lead Converge to a 103-94 overtime victory over Terrafirma in the Commissioner’s Cup of the Philippine Basketball Association yesterday at the Philsports Arena.
Wilson delivered the FiberXers first four points in the extra period while the rest of the team held the Dyip to just a single field goal in a four-minute stretch to seal their first victory after seven games in the season-opening conference.
With that, Converge has to win in its four remaining matches to stay in contention for a playoff berth.
“We were able to make stops in the endgame and hit our shots,” Converge coach Aldin Ayo said. “Everybody was disappointed (with the season performance), but we just have to continue to go on.”
For Wilson, getting an opportunity to know his teammates more was the key to their improved performance.
“When I first came here to play, it was just two days since I arrived and I barely knew the names of half of the team. Now, you could tell that we’re playing much better as a team. We just have to continue building on it,” Wilson said.
Wilson finished with 32 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, dished out five assists and blocked two shots, but he got plenty of help from rookie Schonny Winston and reigning Rookie of the Year Justin Arana.
Winston ended up with 17 markers while Arana went two rebounds short of a double-double performance as he tallied 14 points and eight rebounds.
