Magnolia stays on red alert

Tournament leader Magnolia is not taking things lightly even though the team is already guaranteed a top four berth.

In fact, the Hotshots resumed working on New Year’s Eve to stay sharp at the restart of the Philippine Basketball Association Commissioner’s Cup.

The Hotshots return to action on Saturday in an out-of-town game against Meralco in Iloilo City.

With a 9-1 win-loss record, the Hotshots are assured of a twice-to-beat advantage going into the playoffs, but want to end the elimination round on a winning note against Meralco, which parades a new import in Shonn Miller, who just won a championship in the Mexican League.

“We took a long break, allowed our team members to spend time with their families during Christmas until the 30th and we resumed training on New Year’s Eve,” Magnolia coach Chito Victolero said.

“We wanted to have one long break then resume training so we won’t be interrupted anymore.”

But come Saturday, Victolero expect the Hotshots to come out all locked in with one purpose.

“The playoff mode, I want to see that beginning Saturday. Although we still have one more game left, we want to treat it as if we’re already in the playoffs.”

“We don’t want our energy to simmer down. The intensity and level of play should remain high.”
