Akari tapped Raffy Mosuela as interim coach for the 2024 Premier Volleyball League season slated to begin on 17 February.
A team insider informed DAILY TRIBUNE that the Chargers management decided to let Mosuela take over the club’s preparation while still deciding on the perfect replacement for former coach Jorge Souza de Brito.
“The management is still looking for coach Jorge’s replacement so for the meantime Raffy Mosuela will handle the team in an interim capacity,” the source said.
The Brazilian tactician resigned from his post last month after four conferences with Akari.
De Brito came in June 2022 when the expansion team joined the country’s first and only women’s professional volleyball league for the Reinforced Conference.
The arrival of new blue-chip recruits in former De La Salle University standouts Fifi Sharma and Justine Jazareno hooking up with prolific scorer Faith Nisperos and grizzled veteran Dindin Santiago-Manabat put the Chargers as a dark horse in last year’s season-ending 2nd All-Filipino Conference.
However, Akari ended up with only five wins in 11 games for seventh place in the 12-club field.
The Chargers said that it wanted a new direction and parted ways with De Brito.
Akari then made huge recruitment deals to start the year, signing veteran hitter Grethcel Soltones and former Creamline ace middle blocker Ced Domingo.
With the addition of two, the Chargers now have better pieces to contend for the crown.
But with just a little over a month before the expected season-opening 1st AFC, Akari is sticking with what is left of its coaching staff from the last conference to ensure minimal adjustments in running its system.
