Medicine rules 6th UST Rector’s Cup

Ben Baniel and Glenn Abellon led the victors in the recent University of Santo Tomas Rector’s Cup alumni golf tournament held at two of the four courses of the Eagle Ridge Golf and Country Club in Gen. Trias, Cavite.

Medicine was hailed team champion. Pharmacy came in second, Engineering third and Civil Law and Science fourth.

Baniel emerged as winner in Lowest Gross category at the Norman course, while Abellon captured the counterpart plum at the Faldo course.

“It’s great to see that the Rector’s Cup is becoming bigger and bigger each year,” said Dr. Ian Laurel, the chief organizer of the event which drew 240 participants.

It was the sixth staging of the meet which helped raise funds for the Thomasian varsity athletes.

Salinggawi, UST’s premier cheering squad was at hand to boost the atmosphere before the shotgun starts as well as during awarding ceremony.

UST Rector, Very Rev. Fr. Richard Ang, also graced the event and lauded the efforts to gather the alumni in a fun-setting raising funds for the future sporting superstars.

At Norman course, Raphael Palma bagged the Lowest Net with Ramon Boniol taking the Class A championship. Raul Montealto was second and Earel Gardiola third.

Class B title went to Irving Tan, second place to Joseph Gaytano and third place to Ananias Canlas. Class A top plum went to Bony Tacardon, second place Warren So and third place Marcelino Ostrea.

Fun awards were also given away with Frankie Magsalin III taking the Most Accurate Drive, Jerenato Alfante Nearest to the Pin and Ryan Karlo Ramos Longest Drive.

Over at the Faldo course, Ed Yabut nailed the Lowest Net as well as the Nearest to the Pin awards.

Marc Reyes was Class A champion besting Arvin Arbas and Ronald Bairan who settled for second and third places, respectively.

Gilberto Abuan held sway in Class B with JJ Eclarinal and Rod Segui taking second and third. Erickson Co prevailed in Class C as Raymond Casipit and Francis Mendoza took second and third.

Ecotan was champion in Guest Division, beating John Kit and Jess Laigo in the podium.

Mitz King ruled the Ladies Division with Corazon Atienza and Hannalai Dulay-See taking the second and third places, respectively.

Lou Gardiola took the Most Accurate Drive and Elvin Ecotan won the Longest Drive.
