John Cabang reset the national record in the men’s 60-meter hurdles after finishing third in the 11th Asian Indoor Athletic Championships in Tehran early Sunday.

Residing in Spain, Cabang, 22, clocked 7.64 seconds to finish behind gold medal winner David Yefremov of Kazakhstan, who clocked 7.60 and silver winner Qin Weibo of China after a 7.63.

Cabang had erased the decade-old Philippine mark of 7.68 by Eric Cray in the heats when he did 7.71.

The Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association lauded Cabang’s feat.

“Congratulations to our national athlete John Cabang Tolentino for winning in the 60m hurdles at the 11th Asian Indoor Athletic Championships,” the federation posted on social media.

“John’s impressive time of 7.64 has earned him a medal and set the new Philippine Indoor Record (Pending Ratification) in the 60m hurdles. We are proud of you.”

Meanwhile, Southeast Asian Games gold medalist Janry Ubas settled for fifth place in the men’s long jump after doing 7.60m.

Zhang Mingkun of China claimed the gold medal after getting 7.97m while Japan’s Yuto Toriumi came in second place with 7.89m.
