Despite being in limbo after getting released by his Japanese club, Carl Tamayo asserted that he is focused on helping Gilas Pilipinas in the first window of the FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers.

Tamayo, who will be playing without a contract after getting released by Ryukyu Golden Kings last January, said he remains glued to his goal of helping Gilas win their first game against Hong Kong on Thursday at the Tsuen Wan Stadium.

“I came here to serve the country. It doesn’t matter what happened to my career. I’m here to help the team,” Tamayo said.

“I’m just grateful to be here, to be part of Gilas.”

The last time Tamayo suited up for Gilas was in the 2023 FIBA World Cup Qualifiers in which he averaged 8.3 points in three games.

Tamayo said he was given advice by veterans LA Tenorio, Justin Brownlee and Japeth Aguilar on how to stay consistent at the professional level.

“Kuya LA, Kuya Justin and Kuya Japeth knew coach Tim’s (Cone) system. They taught us how to execute and how a life a lifestyle of a pro like how to take care of yourself,” Tamayo said.

Aside from getting tips from the veterans, the two-time University Athletic Association of the Philippines Mythical Five member also couldn’t wait to partner with De La Salle University star Kevin Quiambao.

“We were rivals back in college and now we have a chance to be teammates again,” Tamayo, who played with Quiambao in high school at the National University Nazareth School, said.

“Knowing Kevin, we already knew each other’s style of play. I’m happy to have Kevin for this Gilas stint.”
