Alex Eala’s bid to win two titles in the W50 Trnava went up in smoke after suffering twin losses at the TC Empire in Slovakia last Saturday.

Eala, 18, was at the wrong end of an upset as she lost, 2-6, 6-3, 6-7 to Anastasiia Gureva of Russia in the quarterfinal of the women’s singles.

The Rafael Nadal Academy graduate played for two hours and 29 minutes before losing to her Russian foe,  ranked at No. 475 in the Women’s Tennis Association rankings.

Gureva is set to face Nikola Bartunkova of the Czech Republic in the semifinal of the $40,000 netfest.

Hours after her singles campaign came to a close, Eala and her partner Zeynep Sonmez of Turkey fell to Lulu Sun of Switzerland and Moyuka Uchijima of Japan, 6-2, 6-2, in the semifinal.

Eala has yet to win a singles title since 2023 and has yet to follow up on her W50 Pune double title last January.
