Ernest John Obiena sets his sights on a podium finish as he competes in the 2024 World Athletics Indoor Championships at the Commonwealth Arena in Glasgow, Scotland.
Obiena will be competing on Monday at 3:05 a.m. (Manila time) as he tries to get his first medal in this tournament.
So far, Obiena has won two gold medals in February.
His first mint in 2024 was at the Memorial Josip Gašparac in Osijek, Croatia last 20 February before setting a new national and Asian indoor pole vault record of 5.92 meters at the ISTAF Berlin meet in Germany three days later.
For Obiena, who already qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympics, he hopes his tweaks and adjustments will play into effect as he faces the likes of Chris Nilsen of the United States and world champion Armand Duplantis of Sweden in the 12-man competition.
“Constant improvement. As much as 2023 has been a good year, the moment the Asian Games ended we were already planning for 2024,” Obiena said in a radio interview yesterday.
Meanwhile, Lauren Hoffman failed to make it to the semifinal of the women’s 400m event after clocking in 54.66 seconds in Heat 3 to finish at fifth place and missing out on the top four slots to make it to the next round.
John Cabang, on the other hand, is competing in the men’s 60m hurdles as of press time.
