Matienzo, Mulligan connive with Pirates

Jasper Matienzo and Peter Mulligan are not going anywhere.

Lyceum of the Philippines University landed the services of Matienzo and Mulligan, making them eligible to see action in Season 100 of the National Collegiate Athletic Association men’s basketball tournament this year.

Matienzo and Mulligan are two of the best players in the Pirates’ junior squad.

In fact, Matienzo was the leading scorer with 11.4 points, 4.7 rebounds. 1.8 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.0 block per game while Mulligan averaged 6.5 points and 2.6 rebounds in nine games for the Junior Pirates, who missed the Final Four with a 2-7 win-loss record.

Lyceum coach Gilbert Malabanan said both Matienzo and Mulligan are ready to prove their worth as they seek to come up with a competitive team for the centennial season of the country’s oldest collegiate league.

“Actually, I talked to them about our plans, they will be part of our pool. Of course, I will give everybody a chance who will be on our final lineup,” said Malabanan, who steered Lyceum to the second spot of the Final Four race of the previous season. Unfortunately for them, they lost to eventual champion San Beda University in the semifinals.

He added that they continue to stack up their roster with quality players after Enoch Valdez exhausted his playing years and Shawn Umali transferred to the College of Saint Benilde last February.
