Two more Filipino athletes are on their way to the 2024 Paris Olympics as Nesthy Petecio and Aira Villegas won their respective bouts in the 2024 1st World Olympic Boxing Qualifying in Busto Arsizio in Italy early Tuesday.
Petecio, who got a silver medal in the Tokyo Summer Games in 2021, got a majority decision over Esra Yildiz Kahraman of Turkey in the semifinal bout of the women’s 57-kilogram division.
This will be her second straight stint in the Olympics.
Earlier, Aira Villegas booked her ticket to the French capital as she got a unanimous decision over Zlatislava Genedieva Chukanova of Bulgaria in the quarterfinal.
Petecio and Villegas join fellow boxer Eumir Marcial, wbo booked his Paris slot last year at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, as well as gymnasts Carlos Yulo and Aleah Finnegan and pole vaulter EJ Obiena, increasing the Philippine delegation to seven athletes so far.
