Games Saturday:
(Paco Arena)
2:30 p.m. — PGJC-Navy vs VNS
5:30 p.m. — NU-Sta. Elena vs Cignal
PGJC-Navy’s energy and aggressiveness proved too much for VNS One-Alicia as the Sealions rolled to a 25-20, 25-19, 25-21, victory Thursday to move a step closer to clinching bronze in the Spikers’ Turf Open Conference at the Paco Arena in Manila.
Raring to salvage a podium finish after getting the boot in the race to the championship round, Navy buckled down to business right from the opening serve to draw first blood in the best-of-three battle for third.
Setter EJ Casana distributed the ball well to keep the net defense of the Griffins guessing as he outplayed VNS playmaker Ish Polvorosa. Casana tallied 20 excellent sets to help the Sealions smash 40 kills.
Joeven de la Vega delivered 10 kills in his 14-point outing and added seven digs while team captain Greg Dolor scored eight points hinged on seven spikes.
“We failed to advance in the Finals so our goal now is to at least win the bronze and get a podium finish,” Dolor said.
“We just applied the lessons we learned in the past few games.”
The Sealions get a chance to seal the series on Saturday.
In case the series is tied and the Finals showdown between Cignal and National University-Sta. Elena ends in two games, the team with the better winning quotient will pocket bronze.
Game 1 of the best-of-three Finals is being played as of press time.
