Adamson University edged out De La Salle University, 86-84, in overtime to end a two-game slide and close the first round of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 85 men’s basketball tournament on a high note Saturday at the Ynares Sports Center in Antipolo.
Jerom Lastimosa had a career night with 29 points on 10-of-23 field goal shooting but it was Lenda Douanga and Vince Magbuhos who nailed huge baskets at crunch time for the Falcons, who tied the Green Archers at fifth with a 3-4 win-loss card.
The fourth year guard also pulled down six rebounds and dished out eight assists including the crucial pass to a wide-open center Douanga above the key for the three-pointer that tied the regulation at 79 and forced the extension.
Magbuhos had a quiet eight points but his second of just two made treys in nine attempts put Adamson in front, 86-84, with just 1:52 left in overtime.
“It was our second overtime game this season and right after regulation, we reminded the players we should have learned our lesson in that previous overtime game against UP, where we forced the overtime but first couple of minutes, nag-slack off kami that’s why we lost that game to UP,” Adamson coach Nash Racela said.
“But today, it was nice that we were able to remind them and it was nice that they were able to respond positively. That’s how you’re able to win ball games.”
Joshua Yerro, who handed Magbuhos the kick out pass for the game-winning three, got 13 points. Douanga also had 13 markers and 10 boards while Cedrick Manzano posted 13 points.
La Salle took an 84-83 lead with 3:05 left in the overtime off a floater from Evan Nelle before Magbuhos hit his go-ahead triple.
Cyrus Austria missed two charities for the Green Archers in the next play, Jed Colonia missed a triple on the other end but La Salle came out empty-handed in the last 8.2 seconds after Nelle bricked his layup attempt.
Kevin Quiambao led the Taft-based squad with 20 points while Michael Phillips had 17 markers. Schonny Winston exited the match with just two minutes left in regulation after suffering cramps on his left calf.
