Game today:
(Filoil EcoOIl Centre)
3 p.m. — Letran vs San Sebastian

John Abis erupted for a career-high 21 points as the University of Perpetual Help System Dalta pulled off a 75-72 overtime win over San Beda University in Season 98 National Collegiate Athletic Association men’s basketball tournament at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan Saturday.

Abis went 6-of-8 from the field and grabbed nine rebounds to help the Altas break a seven-year losing streak against the Red Lions.

The last time Perpetual took down San Beda was in Season 91 on a clutch basket from Bright Akuhuetie, 88-86, last 10 September 2015.

After the regulation play ended at 70-all, Abis sank four free throws for a 74-70 lead with 20 seconds left on the clock.

JB Bahio then went 2-for-2 at the charity stripe for San Beda to cut the lead, 72-74, but Justine Sanchez’s triple in the 6.5-second mark bounced off the rim.

Rey Barcuma then split his free throws with 1.5 seconds remaining in the game to seal the deal for the Altas.

Perpetual head coach Myk Saguiguit said he wanted his boys to step up against the Lions and give school owner Dr. Antonio L. Tamayo an early birthday present.

“I told the boys that this could be the last chance we will play San Beda in the season. We’re grateful that my players allowed me to experience this win,” said Saguiguit, whose team shot 19 of 28 free throws in the game.

Besides Abis, Carlo Ferreras also dropped 17 points, eight rebounds, and two assists for Perpetual which improved to a 5-6 win-loss record.

JB Bahio paced the Lions with a double-double of 14 markers and 10 boards.

San Beda sank to a 6-4 slate.

San Beda head coach Yuri Escueta said the team needs to move forward and focus on the remaining games in the second round.

“Learn and move on. Focus on every game and win as many games as possible.”

Meanwhile, Mapua University prevailed over Emilio Aguinaldo College, 77-67, in the second game.

The Cardinals improved to a 3-9 win-loss record while dealing the Generals their 11th defeat in 12 matches.
