BAGUIO CITY — As Manila Southwoods moved inexorably to a sweep of the championship divisions, Camp John Hay Golf Club and three other teams sealed their victories in their respective divisions on the penultimate day of the 72nd Fil-Am Invitational in Baguio City Saturday.
CJHGC scored a six-point victory over Uragun 1 in the Fil-A bracket despite getting a two-point penalty.
The four-round tally was 421 points, including 112 points at the Baguio Country Club.
Emilio Curran holed out with a double bogey on the final hole, but his infraction hardly mattered as CJHGC had already built a safe lead.
Curran led CJGHC with 30 points and got solid support from George Punasen and Ranz Louie Balay-Odao who had 22 apiece. Melchor Carlos Rabanes also counted with 22.
Uragun 1 leaned on Francisco Santana Jr.’s routine par on the last hole to edge Summit Point Team 1 by a single point.
Drawing 28 points from Santana, Uragun 1 pooled 100 points to bring its total to 415. Other scorers were Don Breganza 27, Dennis Nicomedes 24 and Joe Nathan Tenefrancia 21.
Summit Point closed with 97 points behind Abe Avena and Lisandro Opulencia who each had 27 points.
Also scoring were Nelson Ventura and Alan Edgardo Alegre with 22 and 21, respectively.
The other winning teams were Time Cargo Logistics Team 2 in Am-A, 3k Rock Engg & Const Corp Team 1 in Fil-D, and Uragun 2 in Am-D.
Time Cargo wound up with 409, 11 points ahead of Forest Hills Team 2.
Joseph Tambunting led the team with 30 points followed by Derek Ramsay and Rusty Bayani with 28 each and Theody Pascual with 26 at Camp John Hay.
Forest Hills shot the day’s best score — 116 — but was not enough to topple Time Cargo. Scoring for the Antipolo-based squad were Raymond Bunquin 32, Ronnie Littaua 31, Joseph Oliver Uy 28, and Edgar Lee 25.
X1R Tipsypig Mizuno Team 2 was in far third with 375 following a closing 106.
Manila Southwoods built imposing leads in the Fil and Am championship classes after three rounds.
Carl Jano Corpus, hitting all but two greens, became the first player to break par at the BCC, scoring 37 points behind four birdies against three bogeys.
Southwoods built a 56-point lead over Forest Hill Team 1 in the Fil-championship.
The other scorers were Aidric Chan 31, Kristoffer Arevalo 30, and Jeff Jung 29.
Forest Hills collected 94 points from Augusto Pacheco (27), Jose Inigo Raymundo (24), Joshua Buenaventura (22), and Rodel Mangulabnan (21).
SPES Team 1 moved to within seven points of Forest Hills by posting 107 points behind Bayani Garcia (34), Marvin Luis Mendoza (29), Nino Bascon (24), and Justin Limjap 24.
Over at CJH, Southwoods’ second team extended its lead over Royal Northwoods by 61 points after pouring 141 points at CJH.
Southwoods now has 379 points.
Shinichi Suzuki led the onslaught with 37 points while Masaichi Otake added 36. Marc Lu and Lanz Uy had 34 apiece.
Northwoods drew 33 points from Patrick Gene Tambalque and a pair of 28s from Tristan Jefferson Padilla and Alexander Crisostomo. The 27 of either Santino Pineda or Zach Villaroman counted.
Northwoods lost three points on penalties after Tambalque and Villaroman informed the committee they made wrong penalty drops in previous rounds.
Riviera-Batangas Barakos stood in third place with 307 after posting 117 points.
