DAVAO CITY — Lucas de Guzman, Rafella Arienna Batican and Jared Saban became the only players to break par on their way to victories in their respective divisions in the 2023 JGFP Davao Championships at the Apo Golf and Country Club in Davao City Friday.
Sisters Nicole and Stephanie Gan swept to victories while Brittany Tamayo, Alonzo Retuerto and David Teves rounded out the other division winners.
De Guzman, the six-year-old wonder kid, fired an eagle and six birdies to counter six bogeys to top the boys’ 6-and-under on even-par 144, 33 strokes ahead of Ethan Lago.
Batican matched De Guzman’s output to rule the girls’ 7-8 bracket on tournament-best 143, 86 strokes clear of Merry Angel Salvador.
The battle for the boys’ 9-10 title was tight with Saban posting a 71 to edge Ralph Batican by one shot. Saban totaled 149.
It was a family affair in the girls’ 11-12 and 6-and-under.
Eleven-year-old Nicole Gan staved off the challenge of twin sisters Mona and Lisa Sarines, closing with a 75 for 151.
Mona Sarines shot a 76 to place second on 154 while Lisa Sarines settled for third on 156 following a 78.
Tamayo came out on top of the girls’ 9-10 on 152 after a 79. Kim Barroquillo also had a 79 for 159.
Retuerto, who opened with an 86, improved with an 80 to complete a runaway 48-point win over Jeremiah Ordanza in the boys’ 7-8.
In the boys’ 11-12, Teves was untouchable on 158 after a closing 77. Gio Pasquil was second with 189 following 95.
The final round was marred by the news that the father of George Wacan passed away on Thursday.
Despite the family tragedy, Wacan went on to complete the tournament.
The JGFP provided the bereaved family with fund assistance.
The tournament resumes with the holding of competition in the 13-14, 15-16 and 17-18 divisions on Saturday.
