The Philippine Olympic Committee is excited to participate in the Paris Olympics as it marks the 100 years of the country’s participation in the Summer Games.
POC president Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino stressed that they are leaving no stone unturned in coming up with a solid preparation for the Summer Games that will be held in the French capital for the first time since 1924.
Tolentino is still in France to strike a deal for a pre-Olympic training venue at the Academos Sports Center in Moselle in the City of Metz.
“It’s a century of Filipino athletes’ campaign in the Olympics,” Tolentino said.
“Hidilyn Diaz won for the country its first Olympic gold medal in Tokyo, and that was historic. But how about a more historic centennial Olympic campaign?”
The Philippines debuted in the Olympics in Paris 1924 with David Nepomuceno as its sole representative in the 100 and 200-meter runs in the athletics competition.
The country participated in 21 more Olympics after that and has collected 14 medals
— one gold, five silver and eight bronze medals.
