Smooth as silk.
This was how golf director Benjie Sumulong described the first day of the 35th Mango Tee member-guest golf tournament at the Alabang Country Club in Muntinlupa Monday.
Except for a slight delay in the morning, which he said was normal for an event of this magnitude, Sumulong said the tournament proceeded without a hitch.
“I was nervous and excited. It was like preparing for your wedding,” said the flamboyant 66-year-old who joined the club early this year.
“Come awards night, that’s when you’re going to say I dos.”
Tournament sponsors put up tents or stalls in front of the clubhouse and halfway houses to promote their products.
Cars, golf carts, and motorcycles that would be given away as hole-in-one prizes were displayed in designated holes.
Two brand-new cars that would be raffled off on Saturday were also on display near the clubhouse.
The atmosphere was festive.
While waiting for the start of the round, players were seen joining the traditional cash bonanza raffle that offers P500,000, P300,000, and P200,000 in cash prizes.
For P1,000, players can pick a number from 1 to 1,000.
The lucky three winners will be known on Saturday.
Those who played in the afternoon were treated to dinner and cocktails at the club’s ballroom.
Tournament giveaways include a Srixon golf bag, Fenix golf shirts, and Adidas golf caps.
Forget the scores, everybody went home happy.
