Gaston glad to deliver for Chery

Pauline Gaston does not mind a delayed debut with her new team Chery Tiggo.

She patiently waited for the opportunity to showcase what she could bring to the table for the Crossovers.

When head coach Aaron Velez finally called her number off the bench, Gaston delivered an inspired game to help Chery Tiggo claim the scalp of Army, 25-21, 23-25, 25-16, 25-12, in the Premier Volleyball League All-Filipino Conference last Saturday at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.

Gaston, who transferred from Choco Mucho during the offseason, made a huge impact on both offense and defense after scoring eight points and tallying seven excellent receptions.

“I’m happy that they gave me a chance. Even in training and even before games they always tell us to be ready,” Gaston said.

“Because we can’t predict what will transpire during the game. There could be injuries or whatever, so we on the bench should always be ready. Our team gives a collaborative effort. It’s not about just one player standing out.”

The Ateneo de Manila University product started in the second set to take the spot of open spiker EJ Laure. She was also fielded in the first six in the next two frames for winger Shaya Adorador.

Gaston, who prefers to be called Pauline rather than her nickname Ponggay, stayed on the bench in the Crossovers’ straight sets win over Cignal last Tuesday.

“I super trust the process and trust in the Lord as what Coach always says. I know they have a plan for me. Even if they didn’t field me in the first game, maybe that was not the right time for me to get into the game. Besides, my teammates did a great job in the first game so I know I’ll have my chance,” she said.

“That win in the first game, I felt like I was part of it even if I didn’t get a chance to play.”

Gaston’s performance complemented the team effort displayed by the 2021 Open Conference champion team.

Reigning Reinforced Conference Most Valuable Player and Crossovers’ scoring leader Mylene Paat praised Gaston’s energy and hard work to help Chery Tiggo remain unbeaten and on top of standings tied with defending champion Creamline and F2 Logistics.

“Ponggay is mature and a very jolly person inside the court. Her presence boosts our morale. Aside from her talent and skills, we all know Ponggay, she would deliver once fielded in. She’s also pushing and cheering us on even if she’s just on the bench,” Paat, who scored a game-high 26 points against the Lady Troopers said.

Despite a relief role to open a new chapter in her professional career, Gaston was grateful for the trust and the love she is receiving from a club that accepted her with open arms.

“Of course, I’m happy (transferring) here. No regrets. I’m home na,” she said.
