Ancajas eyes payback in LA

SOCIAL MEDIA

Revenge is foremost on Jerwin Ancajas’ mind when he battles Argentine Fernando Martinez in their 8 October rematch in Los Angeles.

While regaining the International Boxing Federation super-flyweight crown is tops on his agenda, getting back at the South American is actually the motivation behind his desire to exercise the rematch clause.

A source with knowledge of Ancajas’ buildup for Martinez told Daily Tribune that in the event the Filipino southpaw gets it back, he won’t stay long in the division and might even relinquish it and move up in weight.

“He just wants to get back at Martinez and I was told that Ancajas won’t even defend the title but vacate the throne so he can start his campaign at bantamweight,” the US source said.

Ancajas has been having problems dropping to 115 lbs in his last two fights but believes he can still do it one more time.

Martinez stood toe-to-toe with Ancajas when they fought last February and managed to score an upset and end his fancied foe’s lengthy six-year reign.

The Ancajas-Martinez shootout will take place at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson as part of a triple-header.

Presently, Ancajas is in the thick of training in Magallanes, Cavite.

The plan is for his team to travel to the United States three weeks before the fight.
