Magsayo targets early 2023 return

SOCIAL MEDIA

Mark Magsayo will have to wait a bit before getting another chance at regaining his lost laurels.

Last July, Magsayo dropped a decision to mandatory Mexican challenger Rey Vargas in San Antonio, Texas, to surrender the World Boxing Council featherweight crown.

MP Promotions chief Sean Gibbons told Daily Tribune that Magsayo will likely receive another title try after a proposed major fight in January or February of 2023.

Magsayo, a Bohol-born hard-hitter, was the last Filipino world champion to lose a title strap as all five reigning champs had their respective strangleholds got unloosened in less than a year stretching back to Manny Pacquiao’s downfall in August 2021 in Las Vegas.

Gibbons likewise revealed that up-and-coming hopefuls Carl Jammes Martin as well as ex-champs Rene Cuarto and Marlon Tapales are on course in securing title bids.

Cuarto’s rematch with Daniel Valladares of Mexico will take place in the Philippines.

“I am just working on the finances,” Gibbons said.

Tapales is in the thick of training at JC Mananquil’s Sanman Boxing Gym in General Santos City and is slated to reunite with LA-based Filipino trainers Ernel Fontanilla and Ting Ariosa at the Wild Card in Hollywood.
