Ronnie Magsanoc is taking over as basketball commissioner of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 85 following the recent appointment of Richard “Dickie” Bachmann as chairperson of the Philippine Sports Commission.
Bachmann has expressed his full confidence in the ability and experience of the retired professional basketball star and current Meralco assistant coach to oversee the remaining basketball tournaments of the season.
Magsanoc appears to be the perfect choice for the position being a former cager himself, a basketball analyst and a college basketball coach.
The member of the Philippine Basketball Association 25 Greatest Players is no stranger to taking the reins in basketball events after serving as commissioner of Season 84 3×3 basketball.
“Last year, the one who handled the 3×3 was Ronnie Magsanoc,” Bachmann said. “I did my part and finished the UAAP season.”
The UAAP is set to open its second round competitions this month with the juniors basketball tentatively scheduled to begin on 10 January. The collegiate and high school 3×3 basketball schedule is yet to be discussed by the UAAP.
Bachmann, who served as Alaska’s team manager and governor and briefly sat as team manager of Converge in the Philippine Basketball Association, was appointed for a two-season term by the UAAP to handle its hoops events in September last year.
Under his watch, the league saw improvement in officiating and the introduction of the added innovation of the coaches’ challenge system.
However, the long-time corporate executive had to cut his UAAP stint short to heed the call of no less than President Bongbong Marcos to serve as the top honcho of the government’s sports agency.
Bachmann was officially appointed as PSC chair on 28 December, replacing Noli Eala. Eala headed the PSC for just about four months after Marcos took office.
The PSC head said that he will attend the second semester events meeting of the UAAP today.
