Carlos Yulo has booked a place in the final of the men’s floor exercise in the second leg of the FIG World Cup at the Aspire Dome in Doha, Qatar last Wednesday.
Yulo, who failed to qualify in his pet apparatus in the first leg in Cottbus, Germany last month, earned a score of 14.5 points to rank second in the top eight.
Tokyo Olympics champion Artem Dolgopyat of Israel topped the event with 14.6 points with Great Britain’s Luke Whitehouse getting third place with 14.166.
Another Filipino gymnast, Juancho Miguel Besana, placed 23rd with 12.733 points.
Gymnastics Association of the Philippines president Cynthia Carrion said she is hoping Yulo will get to perform better on Friday for the final.
“Dolgopyat is the Olympic champion but hopefully Caloy will do better than him to get the gold,” Carrion told Daily Tribune in an online conversation.
“For Friday, let’s pray for him to get the gold.”
Meanwhile, Yulo dropped out of the men’s rings after placing 11th with 14.166 points.
Liu Yang of China topped the men’s rings with 15.33 points with Adem Asil of Turkey at second with 14.9 and Artur Avetisyan of Armenia at third with 14.766.
As of press time, Yulo and Besana are competing in the vault, horizontal bar and parallel bars.
