All-Star inclusion sparks Yap return

James Yap will be returning for another tour of duty for Rain or Shine in the Philippine Basketball Association Season 48 starting 15 October.

Yap, a two-time Most Valuable Player, said his good performance in the previous season, including an All-Star inclusion, motivated him to return to help the Elasto Painters win their first title since 2016.

“It means that you’re still being remembered by fans. They still see how valuable you are,” Yap told Daily Tribune in a telephone conversation on Tuesday.

The 41-year-old Yap said he has been itching to play despite not being part of the Elasto Painters squad that is competing in the PBA On Tour.

Still, he believes that his exclusion is a blessing in disguise.

“I want to focus on my role as councilor of San Juan City at this time and do my projects for my constituents so by the time the new PBA season resumes, I have already fulfilled my duties and can concentrate on Rain or Shine,” the 6-foot-3 gunner said.

Despite his hectic schedule, Yap asserted that he is still staying in shape by doing personal workout.

In the season-ending Governors’ Cup, he returned to action after being idle for one and a half year but showed up in good shape to put up a solid performance.

Unfortunately for him, his season was cut short when the Elasto Painters got eliminated early.

Yap feels that he still has some unfinished business and still wants to exit the PBA on a high note.

“Of course, if ever I end my career, I want people to remember me that I’m playing and still being able to compete,” Yap said.

“I want to leave on a positive note.”
