The Philippine Sports Commission is looking to have a bigger involvement in future Palarong Pambansa tournaments.

PSC chairman Richard “Dickie” Bachmann said he hopes the PSC will be more involved in one of the biggest grassroots programs in the country.

“This is my first time experiencing Palaro so the scope of PSC, I found the amount of work for me is lacking. PSC should do more and help out more and I think it’s one of the areas I think we should improve,” Bachmann said.

“Well, this year, we just provided equipment and have our technical officials assist them. That’s all basically we did this year and hopefully, we would get more involved with all the guidelines of all the sports and the event itself.”

Unlike the Batang Pinoy and the Philippine National Games, which will all be held in the cities of Pasig and Manila from 17 to 22 December, the Palarong Pambansa is under the Department of Education.

On the final day of the Palaro, Region VI secured the secondary boys basketball title, dethroning defending champion National Capital Region, 77-73, at the Marikina Sports Center in Marikina City last Saturday.

Jared Bahay, who made an early commitment to play for the University of the Philippines last March, scored 29 points for Western Visayas.

As of press time, the NCR remains on track for the overall crown with a running tally of 85 gold, 74 silver and 55 bronze medals for a total haul of 214 medals.

Region VI is at second with 149 medals behind a 60-45-44 medal haul and Region III is at third place with 107 medals with a 28-33-46 collection.
