V-League retains 8-team format

Organizers of the V-League Collegiate Challenge look to stick with an eight-team field for both the men’s and women’s divisions.

Sports Vision president Ricky Palou bared that quite a number of schools have expressed interest to join the tournament scheduled to begin its explosive volleyball action on 16 August at the Paco Arena.

However, the league wants to limit the field to a manageable number to ensure participating teams of maximum exposure.

“We are looking at eight teams, eight for men and eight for women. There are actually a lot of teams asking us if they could join,” Palou said.

“We’re trying to look into it but we’re really looking at eight teams so that it would be manageable for a round-robin format.”

The league will meet today to discuss which teams will compose each division.

“If we admit in too many teams and you put them in brackets not all teams get to play,” Palou explained.

“For us, we’re looking at eight and I think we’ll stick to eight.”

Palou added that while most of the games will be played in Paco Arena, the league plans to hold the semifinals and finals in a bigger venue to accommodate a bigger crowd.

“For the semis and finals we’re looking at possibly holding it at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum or Philsports Arena. It depends (on their availability), we’ll see how it goes.”
