Eala stuns Australian top seed

Alex Eala pulled off a major upset after sweeping first seed Priscilla Hon of Australia, 6-2, 6-4, in the quarterfinal of the W25 Roehampton women’s singles tournament National Tennis Centre in London last Friday (Manila time).

Eala, 18, only needed one hour and 19 minutes to beat Hon and advance to the next round.

The world No. 250 netter in the Women’s Tennis Association is pursuing her fourth professional title in her career.

“Third Semi Final of the year,” Eala, the US Open Junior champion, posted on her social media page.

Prior to this tournament, also made it to the semifinal of the W25 Yecla last June where she won it all and the W100 Vitoria-Gasteiz last July with both tournaments being held in Spain.

Eala is currently taking on Netherlands’ Arianne Hartono in the semifinal as of press time.

Hartono, No. 208 in the WTA rankings, enters the tournament as the third seed and defeated Mariam Bolkvadze of Georgia, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3, in a separate quarterfinal match.

Apart from the title, Eala is getting ready for her debut in the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China from 23 September to 8 October.
