NLEX is looking to retool its roster in a bid to win its first title in the Commissioner’s Cup of the Philippine Basketball Association starting 15 October.

Road Warriors head coach Frankie Lim told DAILY TRIBUNE they want to beef up their team after falling short of making the semifinals in the previous Governors’ Cup.

Lim said they are counting on the coming Rookie Draft in which they will be picking seventh as part of the deal that sent Tyrus Hill to Converge last year.

The Road Warriors are supposed to have another first-round pick but it was already dealt to Phoenix Super LPG in a separate transaction.

“We’re waiting for the draft and we resume training on Monday,” Lim wrote in a Viber message to DAILY TRIBUNE.

Lim, who held an executive role in the past, said everything depends on the draft in which they are planning to tap the best player available.

From there, they can start rebuilding the team by acquiring new players from trades that involve future or current players.

“The PBA will open in October, so that’s still a few months away and a lot of things could happen,” Lim said. “Will there be trades? If it happens, then it happens.”

“But right now, all I’m thinking about is how we can make this team better and we can only do that by gathering the best players possible to make our team stronger than the ones we had last season.”

Lim admitted that their choice of import will also be a factor heading into the coming conference.

Last season, the Road Warriors went off to a hot start by parading National Basketball Association veteran Jonathon Simmons, who led them to four straight wins before he was replaced by fellow NBA veteran
Wayne Selden.
