Gilas 3×3 squad prevails

HANGZHOU, China – The 3×3 team made it a double celebration for men’s basketball as it carved out its own winning moment in the 19th Asian Games on Tuesday.

JB Sajonia again led the way as Gilas trounced Chinese Taipei, 17-12, to register a second straight win in the half court game at the Deqing Geographic Information Park Basketball Court.

The victory came hours after the Gilas Pilipinas men’s team routed Bahrain, 89-61, in its initial assignment.

Its 2-0 record in Pool A gives the Filipinos an advantage of clinching an outright quarterfinals berth.

But coach Lester Del Rosario would like nothing but a sweep of the team’s preliminary assignments for an easier path of advancing to the next stage.

“Hong Kong and Mongolia pa ang kalaban. Pag ma-sweep namin, top na (sa group),” he said.

The game against Hong Kong is set on Wednesday, while the Mongolia match is on Friday.

Justin Sanchez and John Ray Pasaol finished with four each for Gilas and three from Bismarck Lina in the win over Taipei.

The scores:

Philippines (17) – Sajonia 6, Pasaol 4, Sanchez 4, Lina 3.

Chinese Taipei (12) – Chang 4, Yu 3, Lin 3, Wang 2.
