Filipino-Ivorian fencer Maxine Esteban is taking a break from her hectic schedule by spending the holidays at home.

But it won’t be long before she eases back into training mode.

“She will be here for two weeks and she will return to Europe in January for the FEI Cup,” Carol Esteban, the prized athlete’s mother told DAILY TRIBUNE.

Esteban won the International Handel Cup European Under-23 Circuit Championship in Halle, Germany over the weekend where she defeated hometown bet Luca Sarah Holland-Cunz, 15-13.

Esteban deserves a much-needed break and her short stay is going to be worth it as she will be with family members and loved ones.

“It will be mostly for family time,” Carol said.

The 21-year-old fencer got the green light to travel to the Philippines from her Italian coach Andrea Magro.

“Her coach knows Christmas is non-negotiable for Maxine. She needs to go home for the holidays.”

The former Ateneo de Manila University ace had to take her talents to Ivory Coast after getting kicked out of the Philippine national fencing team.

And with 2024 being filled with qualifiers for the Paris Olympics, Esteban will have to make the most of the time given to her so that she can be focused and recharged for the next set of tournaments.

Carol said her daughter couldn’t wait to feast on her favorite chow from local fastfood chains.

Even if she had changed allegiance, it is crystal clear that Esteban remains a Filipino at heart.
