Southeast Asian Games gold medalist Teia Salvino failed to advance to the semifinal of the women’s 200-meter freestyle event after finishing 38th out of 50 swimmers in the 2024 World Aquatics Championships in Doha last Tuesday.

The 18-year-old Salvino clocked in two minutes and 8.02 seconds, way off the mark of making it to the top 16 of the event.

Salvino also had a disappointing finish last Sunday with a 28th place in the women’s 100m backstroke.

Janna Van Kooten of the Netherlands clocked in 1:59.41 minutes to clinch the 16th spot.

Meanwhile, China’s Bingjie Li topped the heats after touching the wall with 1:57.41 minutes.

The Philippines has yet to make it past the heats as national record-holder Jarod Hatch finished 30th in the men’s 50-m butterfly with a time of 24.13 seconds.

Salvino, Xiandi Chua and Olympians Jasmine Alkhaldi and Kayla Sanchez also failed to make the cut after finishing 12th out of 14 teams in the women’s 4×100-m freestyle relay after clocking in 3:46.93 minutes.

SEA Games silver medalist Thanya dela Cruz landed 26th out of 53 swimmers in the women’s 100-m breaststroke with a 1:9.12 time while Jerard Jacinto clocked in 57.18 seconds for 35th out of 53 entries in the men’s 100-m backstroke.

The Philippines continues its campaign on Thursday, 15 February, with Sanchez competing in the women’s 100-m freestyle. She will also team up with Chua, Alkhaldi and Salvino in the women’s 4×200-m freestyle relay.
